Podcast #3-- Beginning to do research

So...this third podcast was quite a bit different for me to put together. Editing was not so bad, but filming was. For whatever reason, it took me forever to get what I had to say on tape. I was keeping track of the number of takes I filmed, and it was getting ridiculous. I tried not to adlib too much, and had written out a script, but somehow, just couldn't read the script. I ended up with about 35 minutes of footage that I to watch and sort through. Not the most enjoyable experience. The upside...as frustrating as it was, I did like having so many options to pick from for each segment. Instead of one or two takes to pick from I had 10 to 12. The downside...I thought that I was more succint than I was. I again, apparently adlibbed more than was necessary. I again apologize for the length of my podcast.

Conversely, I found editing to be much easier. iMovie is no longer the devil, and it's actually fun to put a piece together (minus the awkwardness of watching yourself talk). I hope it shows that I feel more comfortable editing now. I don't many tricks, but I hope the ones I use are getting better.

My overall goal for this podcast was to talk about a few of the interesting authors I have come across so far in my research. Hopefully, I was coherent and didn't bore people to tears.

Framing looks good. You might leave a little less head room. The setting works well. I like the road signs, which tell the viewer where they are going. You might consider adding some slides with key points. This would help emphasize major points and would also allow you to cover jump cuts where you want to cut out small segments. Watch out for extraneous noise and such at the end of segments. Actually talked about Gitlin today in my lecture course. Rather than using a fade to black to cover the jumpcut during the Gitlin discussion, you might try a flash—this has become a fairly popular and accepted way of covering jumpcuts. Tie the names back in at the end on something like this to remind the viewer what they are supposed to learn. Nice job.

Wendy,
I like your background, it's not cluttered and it has a nice contrast to the foreground. I wish that my computer room looked as clean and neat as yours!

Also, the framing was good, but you might try zooming in just a tad bit, that might take care of the headroom issue. Also, if you zoom in, it will help your stick out as the foreground in the video.

I feel like I got a little lost on your main points, part of this could be because I am easily distracted. I really liked the road sign graphics, were those done in iMovie? Perhaps adding some powerpoint-like slides at the end of each section would help keep the viewer up to speed on what they just heard. Also, if you premake your slides before you tape your actual podcast, then it might cause you to not improve so much and stick more to the script.

Overall, I think you did a really great job and I'm glad that video editing is not such a laborious task for you anymore!

Wendy,

You did really good job on this podcast. Your background is quite simple and clear. The laptop seems to represent one of new media you’re talking about:) I think you seems more comfortable in front of camera. Audio, background, and lighting, every setting looks good.

Before the scholar Tod Gitlin, there seems some jump but. The sentence was not finished but the video edited. That’s the only negative thing that I found on this podcast.

You give clear information of each different scholar. It was informative and I enjoyed this podcast. I look forward your final podcast.

I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to get this posted to your comments. I was not able to view the podcast from home because it was not accessible. However, once I was able to view it tonight I found it quite good.

You offered great information - meaning your content was fantastic. I really like the change of scene from the last couple podcast. The little bit of color on the wall adds a lot.

Your transition slides were great and they kept me interested in what was come next.

I look forward to your 4th and FINAL blog!

Wendy,
Hello- I apologize for my late comment, I came to your blog a few times at home and I can't view it. So, this is a 'sneaky' review from work!

I enjoyed your podcast-- your background looks good very simple and not distracting from you and the information you are presenting.

I agree with Justin- I like the road sign graphics too -- :)

There was a lot of information, but it was all new to me and kept me interested in what was next.

Good luck with the last one-- although it was just you and I there last night- the computers down there HATE Me too! :(

SO glad we are done!
